When you source gabion boxes, reno mattresses or heavy hexagonal wire mesh, the coating choice directly decides the service life and long-term performance of your geotechnical structure. Many project buyers focus only on price at first, but improper coating selection will lead to rusting, mesh breakage and rework costs within just a few years.
Three mainstream anti-corrosion coatings are widely used in global gabion projects, and each matches specific working environments.
Hot-dip galvanized gabion wire is the basic option. The zinc layer weight ranges from 230g/㎡ to 300g/㎡. It works well for inland dry slopes, temporary works and freshwater projects with low corrosion risk. It is economical for projects with a medium design life and clean atmospheric conditions. It is not recommended for long-term submerged, brackish water or high-acid soil environments.
Galfan (Zn-Al alloy coated wire) is our most popular grade for permanent hydraulic and slope stabilization projects. The zinc-aluminum alloy layer delivers far better anti-corrosion performance than ordinary hot-dip galvanizing. It performs steadily under long-term freshwater immersion, frequent wet-dry cycles and open-air mountain conditions. Most river protection, highway slope and reservoir projects specify Galfan gabion for a long design life.
PVC coated gabion wire is made by extruding a 0.4–0.7mm thick PVC protective jacket over galvanized or Galfan base wire. The extra polymer layer isolates the steel wire from corrosive media. It is the preferred solution for brackish water, slightly polluted water, coastal areas and acidic soil where ordinary metal coating cannot survive. For wetland restoration and drinking water source zones, non-toxic PVC formula is available.
A quick checklist for your selection:
- Dry slope, temporary works, tight budget → Hot-dip galvanized
- Permanent river bank, reservoir, mountain slope → Galfan
- Brackish water, coastal, high-corrosion soil → PVC coated
